Sustainable mobility consultant, Bogotá

Raahgiri Foundation is an awesome organization, with really impressive results since its creation only few years back, and is building a great future improving the lives of crores of people in India. Their amazing "open streets" program, inspired by Bogotá's Ciclovía, provides an unmatched opportunity for children of all ages to enjoy and experience and understand that a different city is possible: a city for people, not just a city for cars. It's support to road safety improvements in Haryana and beyond is also showing a different path to solve the taunting menace of road crashes, that takes away the life and health of too many people in India and the world. One road death is already one too many, and there is no justification, as all these deaths are preventable. Raahgiri Foundation has worked in identifying road safety critical spots and recommending designs that reduce risks, especially for the most vulnerable users, making these places safer by design. Through these, and other programs, Raahgiri Foundation is expected to continue influencing a positive transformation of urban India. I admire it's achievements and expect more in the years to come.

No citizen of India would claim that our streets are safe or that they really allow for any forms of sustainable mobility. That’s why an organisation like Raahgiri Foundation proves so important for the safety and inclusivity of our streets. We need our streets to be universally accessible to all, whether it be a vehicle or an individual on a wheelchair. I am in full support of Raahgiri Foundations’ mission – which it to provide safe, accessible, affordable and equitable mobility choices.

Raahgiri has been an inspiration in the way that it has reached out to people to demonstrate that streets are not only for cars. From a humble beginning in Gurgaon a few years ago, it is now known all over the country. It has very simply shown that if people are provided safe and friendly streets and public spaces, they will use them for enjoyment. Particularly for women in India, accessing public spaces for fun an leisure has never been easy and Raahgiri has been able to give women freedom to have some fun.

Raahgiri Foundation is leading the conversation on roads for the common people. Where in in India do we get to see, experience the possibilities of what roads could be? Seeing children owning roads, enjoying them, using them without having to clutch the hands of elders or being choked with tailpipe emissions. After seeing my first Raahgiri a few years ago, I've always said I want Raahgiri roads 24*7, everywhere. Incredible work, I see cities across India waking to this completely different paradigm which translates into a feeling of hope: a better city is possible!

The domination of our cities by motor vehicles is not inevitable. It doesn’t have to be this way. Yet in many cities, we have become blind to other possibilities. The Raahgiri Foundation is helping give us back our sight by reconnecting us with cities as places for people to dwell, commune and thrive.

Raahgiri Foundation started the all-important conversation and action plan around sustainable mobility solutions as a means of inclusive community development, reducing air pollution and road safety. Kudos to the phenomenal results they have been able to exhibit in a short span of 8 years. It is also worthwhile to mention that the work Raahgiri did in Gurugram became the blueprint for other cities to implement sustainable mobility solutions.   We at HSC are proud to have partnered and contributed in a small way in this initiative.
