PROJECT INFORMATION: 

 

MDI Chowk In the past five years 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021, there have been a total of 13 crashes in MDI Chowk. It had witnessed 3 Fatalities, 8 Serious Injuries, 2 Minor Injuries. Out of which 2 are pedestrian fatalities and 1 serious cyclist crash. 

The major issues were: 

  • Underutilized traffic lights and pedestrian lights. 
  • Wrong side traffic movement from MDI towards Atul Kataria Chowk due to the extra travel distance caused by the U-Turn near signature chowk. 
  • Absence of pedestrian crossings. 

 

PROJECT GOALS: 

  • The trial was focused towards curbing wrong side driving through design changes, removal of jersey barriers and making the intersection safer for vulnerable road users. 
  • The trial was set to be observed for a week and make necessary adjustments with stakeholder inputs. 
  • The trial’s design to be finalized by all the involved stakeholders through ADC Gurugram and GMDA to commence work accordingly. 

OBSERVATIONS:

 

  • Traffic cones were placed to realign the traffic islands in the morning from 6am due to less traffic. 
  • By afternoon, the jersey barriers were removed and placed safely located by the traffic zone officer. 
  • The traffic light timings were adjusted accordingly across the intersections arms. 
  • The wrong side driving count was conducted with the help of volunteers. 
  • The traffic was observed through peak and off peak hours. 
  • Pedestrian counts were conducted on peak hours morning and evening with the help of volunteers. 
  • The observations of the on ground traffic police were noted and slight changes to the design were made accordingly. 
  • The trial was observed for two weeks and pedestrian counts were taken. 
  • There were slight adjustments that have also been made with suggestions from all stakeholders to the realignment of the traffic islands and the drawing has been submitted to GMDA for the permanent changes to the design.
