IFFCO Chowk tactical urbanism trial

The IFFCO chowk intersection is one of the critical blackspots of the Gurugram district spread around a radius of 500 meters. The intersection was having issues such as unmanaged traffic lanes, a lack of pedestrian crossing, and undefined pickup and drop-off points for autos, taxis, and buses. To overcome the issues a trial was conducted with the help of RTA Gurugram, traffic police, GMDA, MCG, and Raahgiri foundation from 29th October 2022 to 15th November 2022.

The following changes were made:

  • Portable traffic signals installed at MG road under IFFCO Chowk flyover.
  • Painted pedestrian crossings at 5 locations
  • Painted pedestrian walkways along the road
  • Island expansions
  • Segregated pickup and drop-off locations of Autos, Taxis, and buses.

WAY FORWARD:

  • There should be the provision of speed-calming measures or tabletop at MG road near the U-turn as well as at the slip lane towards MG road.
  • Permanent Traffic signals, permanent signages for the speed limit, pedestrian crossing, pick up & drop off zones, and directional & other mandatory signages as per IRC should be installed.
  • The bus area should have shelter and seating spaces for people.
  • A dedicated vending zone should also be provided near the bus stands, to keep eyes on the street and make people feel safer.
