People and Climate Together: Reimagining Urban Streets for a Sustainable Future đź’š

Yesterday, Janpath in Gurugram hosted an insightful Walkshop with delegates from the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), as part of a shared mission to reimagine urban streets through the lens of climate resilience, inclusivity, and people-first design.

This unique engagement brought together a diverse team of national and international leaders and experts committed to building sustainable and breathable cities. The visit highlighted the importance of streets that are not only environmentally conscious but also inclusive and responsive to the needs of vulnerable road users.

Key attendees included:

  • Ram Kumar Agrawal, Director, and R.P. Gurung, Scientist E from CAQM

  • Bruno Carrasco, Director General, Climate Change and Sustainable Development Department (CCSD), ADB

  • Toru Kubo, Senior Director, Climate Change Resilience and Environment Cluster (CCRE), CCSD

  • Yoko Watanabe, Director, Environment, CCSD

  • Karma Yangzom, Principal Environment Specialist, CCSD

  • Akshita Sharma, Climate Change Officer (Adaptation), CCSD, ADB India Resident Mission (INRM)

  • Kai Wei Yeo, Principal Portfolio Management Specialist, INRM

The Walkshop explored Janpath’s transformation as a model of what streets can become when people and climate take center stage. The redesigned public space demonstrated how thoughtful infrastructure—featuring shaded walkways, accessible design, and a safe, welcoming environment—can directly address challenges such as urban heat, while also empowering women, children, the elderly, and all pedestrians.

One of the most memorable moments from the Walkshop came from an anecdote shared by Manas Human, CEO of Nagarro, who observed:

“A woman pedestrian with soiled footwear, upon entering this street, cleaned it first before walking on. Isn’t that incredible to witness? It’s a moment when people not only appreciate the public service provided but begin to truly own it.”

This powerful story encapsulated the deeper connection that emerges when public spaces are designed with care, dignity, and a focus on community ownership.

We are proud to have partnered in facilitating this experience, but the leadership and vision behind the Janpath redevelopment belong entirely to the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG). This project reflects their steadfast commitment to sustainable urban development, setting a benchmark for people-friendly street design in India.

As part of our broader mission to make cities cleaner, healthier, and climate-resilient, initiatives like this help move us closer to a future that is not only sustainable, but also equitable and inclusive for all.

We thank all the participants and partners who joined us and helped reaffirm our collective vision for safer and more human-centric urban spaces. 🌍
